Experience
Dr. Larrazábal’s clinical experience spans a wide range of settings, including community mental health, university counseling, and medical centers serving clients with complex medical conditions, including those undergoing cancer treatment. This breadth of experience has deepened their understanding of how systemic oppression, holding marginalized identities, and physical health conditions can shape and complicate one’s mental and emotional well-being.
Dr. Larrazábal is committed to providing culturally responsive, affirming care that centers the impact of identity, culture, and systemic oppression on emotional well-being. They have expertise in DBT, an evidence-based treatment approach designed to help individuals manage overwhelming emotions, navigate relationship difficulties, and build stability during crises. Though DBT is often known as a treatment for individuals with borderline personality disorder, its skills are helpful for anyone who feels their emotions can take control.
Dr. Larrazábal also focuses on understanding emotions and draws on research-supported therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to tailor treatment to each person and help clients build lives aligned with their goals and values.
Dr. Larrazábal specializes in working with people experiencing anxiety, OCD, and trauma, including those who feel stuck in cycles of fear, intrusive thoughts, or avoidance. They have completed extensive training in treating these conditions and are certified in exposure and response prevention (ERP) by the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania. They have also been trained in CBT-I, which is a short-term treatment for insomnia.
Education
Dr. Larrazábal completed a Master’s of Science at the College of William & Mary and went on to earn a second master’s and a doctoral degree from the University of Virginia. Their research has focused on better understanding how people navigate difficult emotions in their everyday lives, which has deepened their ability to help clients understand and manage challenging emotional experiences. Dr. Larrazábal completed their predoctoral internship at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
About Me
Therapy can be a very powerful way to show up for yourself- opening yourself up to new ways of approaching life’s challenges and building the skills to work with your emotions rather than against them. If we work together, I will help you explore what your emotions are trying to tell you. From there, we will focus on developing the skills to feel more of what you want to feel and less of what you don’t, to treat yourself with kindness and respect, and to show up authentically in your relationships.
I make it a priority to create a space that feels safe and affirming, while also challenging you to push toward your goals. Clients often describe me as warm, gentle, and encouraging, while also valuing my humor, directness, and genuine connection. If this sounds like a good fit for you, I look forward to meeting you!
